About this site  - READ ME

The amount of information contained in these pages is limited by two factors; One, the amount of space allocated by CompuServe for a Home Page and Two, if I included all the information I have then there would be no need for anyone to get in touch.

Information Summary

IGI Families

The IGI is a marvelous tool for family historians, but the data is only presented in one way. I have found great value in constructing family lists for each county, and it is this list that I include here. I readily acknowledge that the base information is from the IGI and thank the LDS Church for their work.

Wills

Wills proven before 1858 are located throughout England and Wales. As a result they are more difficult to find and/or obtain. I have concentrated on the post 1858 wills and administrations (Admons) previously held at Somerset House, now at Chancery Lane, London.

There are some 1700+ wills and Admons post 1858. Each will is accompanied by a single sheet, A Grant of Probate. Where a person died without making a will, ie intestate, there is also a single sheet, the Grant of Administration or Admon. As far as I know I have a copy of every will and Admon plus most probate grants for wills up to 1997. Not long afterwards the cost of the documents rose to an exorbitant price and I stopped obtaining copies.

I have extracted into a database all people mentioned in wills and Admons post 1858. I have only include in these pages a basic list of Chiltons who died and for whom there is a Will or Admon and a summary list of the surnames of people mentioned in the documents.

Parish and Other Records

Information on Parish Register entries and other miscellaneous sources has been included in a database now totalling over 8000 records. These records do not include what is available from the IGI, which also have been incorporated into another database.

Births, Marriages and Deaths - GRO Indexes

I have extracted all records from the Births, Marriages and Deaths indexes, over 28000 of them, into a database. In addition I have extracted the records from the Miscellaneous Indexes for Army, Naval, Air, War, Overseas and Consular events.

Census

I have a complete extraction for Buckinghamshire for 1851, 1861 and 1881, which is my home county. The 1881 Census transcription is complete and has produced over 2300 records for Chilton. All of these have been input, together with records from the other Census years of 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891. Many census records have come from other researchers.

Chilton Register

Of the thousands of Chiltons born, I have linked around 4500 in their own family groups, within one very large file. I use an English written, DOS program called Pedigree. At the head of this large "family" is a notional person called "Father of all CHILTON". He has many notional children, based on British counties, e.g. BKM CHILTON. Depending on the origins of family groups each county "child" may have one or more "children", e.g. BKM-1 CHILTON. You have now reached a family group, which could be just two generations or many, depending on the extent of research.

To display this hierarchical "tree" with my other homepages I have used Progenitor, downloaded from CompuServe. I have tried other tools, but Progenitor seems the most capable for what I want. I will try it and, if it does the job, will certainly register.

This Chilton Register does not contain all 4500 people. Progenitor allows you to restrict the people displayed by not allowing access to records with a specified number of years. I have used 60. So, any person born after 1937 will not have their details shown.

Obtaining Further Information

Nearly every page contains my E-mail address. Please use it! Chilton genealogy is my hobby and it has cost me a lot of money and time. However, I have been, and continue to be, happy to share the information I have with anyone who is genuinely researching Chilton roots. You only have to ask. In return I would ask for a copy of your tree with the Chilton links and a copy of any Chilton information so that I can include it in the databases I maintain.

Conventions Used in These Pages

County codes are used in the census based on the Chapman County Codes widely used in the United Kingdom. I notice from the 1881 census fiche that the LDS Church has a different code. Sorry, but I'm not changing. There are more important things to do with my time.

Note the Asterisk field in the GRO records, denoting the fact that I have more information about that event.
